Ramsgate hand crafted flagpole

church, installation, piggotts, flag pole, hand, carvedPiggotts was tasked with sourcing and crafting a 22 metre flagpole made from Douglas-fir for St George the Martyr Church in Ramsgate, Kent. The original flagpole in situ fell down and the client, through their insurance company, sought a replacement through Piggotts.

The flagpole is one of the biggest flagpole projects that Piggotts has undertaken and once completed will be installed back on top of the church in September 2016. Piggotts sourced a new piece of Douglas-fir 15m long which was transported down to Piggotts to begin the process. The piece of Douglas-fir arrived as a square length of timber and since then it has been handcrafted into the finished flagpole shape it is now. The remaining metres were created using some of the original pole and will be attached to the new part on installation. After the crafting had finished and the shape transition had taken place, the flagpole then had to be sealed, coated and painted to bring it up to the original specification, using a two part 15-year-guarantee wood paint.

There was an original weather vane atop the flagpole which was badly damaged in the fall so the vane has also been restored and gilded to look like new and this part will be placed atop of the flagpole on installation. A detailed and extensive installation will take place of the flagpole over the coming weeks using hydraulic lifting equipment, major traffic management and our own very experienced installation team.
