This year the World Athletic Championships took place from 5th – 13th August. In order to celebrate this event, Westfield Stratford City and Piggotts Flags and Branding Ltd designed, produced and installed a celebration display in an area known as “The Street” in Westfield’s shopping centre in Stratford E20.
The design was created bespoke for Westfield using the centre’s own infrastructure. The idea for the creation was a previous installation that Piggotts created and installed for Regent Street’s celebration of The Olympics back in 2012. Designed with installation in mind, as well as the visual impact of having 210 flags from every country attending the event, the rigging consisted of over 2000 metres of cables split over 21 separate rows of 10 flags. These were mounted over 5 separate mounting points to ensure safe installation and each one of the rows contains 5 double-sided flags depicting that country’s national flag, measuring 2.4 metres by 1.2 metres
The installation itself took several nights to complete with our install team working hard to ensure that every care was taken for a safe installation as the centre is open to the public 24 hours a day; therefore it was paramount that this access was not restricted in any way. We installed the flags alphabetically for those countries who attended the World Athletic Championships and checked to ensure that care and attention was not only given to the design of the flags, checking pantone colour references and designs but that all care and respect was given to the hanging of each county’s flag so each country attending would be correctly represented.
Geoff Woodman, Sales Director for Piggotts Flags and Branding Ltd commented “It was a real privilege to not only secure the business but also be a part of the installation itself and see the entire project through from beginning to end.”
Leigh Jessiman, Managing Director for Piggotts Flags and Branding Ltd and the designer of the scheme added, “It was a great challenge to ensure that all of the moving parts of the scheme fitted together from design, production and installation to the rigging and the flags. We are really proud of the result.”
