Shared reading activities can increase development in multiple areas (Doyle &amp; Bramwell, 2006; Debaryshe, 1993; Burner, 1978) and promote language development in children with typical development (Teale &amp; Sulzby,1986; Westby, 1985) and with language impairments (Gillam &amp; Ukrainetz, 2006). Reading every day at home is a great way parents can help improve speech and language development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If your child is younger, or more resistant to book reading, don\u2019t feel that you need to read every word.\u00a0 Instead, talk about what is happing in the pictures.\u00a0 Try to avoid quizzing (i.e. \u201cWhat\u2019s that? What do you see?\u201d), and focus on commenting (i.e. \u201cI see the red bird\u201d) and providing pauses for your child to comment or point.\u00a0 Books with interactive parts, such as lift-the-flap books or Poke-a-Dot books are also great for increasing engagement with books.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For children who are able to engage with books for longer, you can use the CROWD method of dialogic reading.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>C &#8211; Completion<\/strong>: Leaving blanks for your child to complete your sentence (i.e. <em>The porridge in the big bowl was too ____<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>R &#8211; Recall<\/strong>: Straightforward, right there recall questions (i.e. <em>What did Goldilocks eat?<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>O &#8211; Open-ended<\/strong>: Discussion questions that can have a variety of answers (i.e. <em>How do you think Goldilocks felt?<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>W &#8211; WH questions<\/strong>:\u00a0 Who\/what\/when\/where\/why (i.e. <em>Why did Goldilocks like the porridge in the little bowl? Who sleeps in the big bed?<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>D &#8211; Distancing<\/strong>: Questions that make a connection to the student\u2019s opinions or experiences (i.e. <em>How would you feel if you were in that situation?)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Virtually all children&#8217;s books are appropriate for dialogic reading. The best books have rich detailed pictures, or are interesting to your child. Always follow your child&#8217;s interest when sharing books with your child. Some of our favorite books at TAP are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Bear Book<\/strong> <strong>Series<\/strong> by Karma Wilson<\/li>\n<li><strong>There was an Old Lady<\/strong> <strong>Series<\/strong> by Lucille Colandro<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Night Before Book Series<\/strong> by Natasha Wing<\/li>\n<li><strong>If You Give<\/strong>&#8230; <strong>book<\/strong><strong>series<\/strong>\u00a0by Laura Numeroff<\/li>\n<li><strong>King Bidgood\u2019s in the Bathtub<\/strong> by Audrey Wood<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Very Hungry Caterpillar <\/strong>and <strong>The Very Busy Spider<\/strong> by Eric Carle<\/li>\n<li><strong>Walking Through the Jungle <\/strong>and <strong>The Animal Boogie <\/strong>by Debbie Harter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Speech Therapists at Therapy At Play love using picture books in therapy, and for good reason!
